Preparing for your first telehealth consultation

A simple checklist for a more focused conversation with your provider.

For general education only. This information does not diagnose a condition or replace medical advice. Your provider will determine which evaluation or treatment is appropriate for you.

Write down your priorities

Choose the main concerns you want to discuss and note when they started. Include what you have already tried, what has changed, and what you hope to understand after the visit.

Written notes can make it easier to remember details. You can also prepare questions about treatment options, risks, and next steps.

Have your health information nearby

Gather a list of medicines and supplements, allergies, relevant medical history, and recent test results if you have them. Mention pregnancy, breastfeeding, or pregnancy plans when relevant.

Ask the care team what information they need before the appointment. Do not stop medicines or arrange new testing unless your clinician has instructed you to do so.

Prepare your space and device

Find a private, quiet location where you can speak comfortably. Check your device, camera, microphone, and connection, and follow any appointment instructions from the care team.

Confirm how to reconnect or contact the team if the visit is interrupted. If you need accessibility support or an interpreter, request it ahead of time.

Leave with a clear next step

Before ending, confirm what happens next, how to receive any instructions, and when to follow up. Ask about costs and whether any tests or an in person assessment are needed.

Telehealth is not appropriate for every concern and is not an emergency service. For a medical emergency, contact local emergency services rather than waiting for an appointment.

Questions to bring.

  • What information should I send before the visit?
  • Can this concern be evaluated online?
  • What are the next steps and expected costs?
  • How do I contact the team after the appointment?
