Getting started

What can telehealth help with, and what can it not?

Telehealth is a convenient way to reach care for many concerns, but it is not right for everything.

These answers describe how telehealth care generally works. Your provider will confirm anything that applies specifically to you.

Where telehealth fits

Many concerns can be discussed and evaluated through a video or phone visit, including reviewing symptoms, health history, and whether testing or treatment may be appropriate.

Some concerns need an in person examination, labs, or imaging. If that applies to you, a telehealth provider can explain the appropriate next step rather than guessing from a description alone.

When to seek urgent care instead

Telehealth is not an emergency service. For chest pain, trouble breathing, sudden severe symptoms, thoughts of harming yourself, or any emergency, contact local emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department right away.

If a laboratory or clinician contacts you about an urgent result, follow their instructions promptly rather than waiting for a scheduled visit.
